Building an Addition vs. Buying a New House: A Personal Journey

When it comes to making significant changes to your living situation, the decision to build an addition onto your existing home or to buy a new house can be a challenging one. Both options come with their own set of advantages and considerations. In this blog, I'll share why we chose to build an addition onto my parents' house and when it might be better to consider buying a new home.

Why Build an Addition?

1. Emotional Attachment to the Location: One of the primary reasons we decided to build an addition is my parents' deep love for their current location. They live on the beautiful Diamond Pond in Milton, Delaware. The serene pondfront view and the tranquil environment are irreplaceable. Finding another property that offers the same level of peace and beauty would be incredibly difficult.

2. Aging in Place: As my parents are getting older, their current home layout, with all bedrooms upstairs, is becoming less practical. To ensure they can comfortably age in place, we are working with an architect to design a large addition that includes an in-law suite on the ground floor. This will provide them with easy access to all essential living spaces without the need to navigate stairs.

3. Customization: Building an addition allows us to tailor the new space to meet my parents' specific needs. We are not only adding the in-law suite but also expanding the kitchen to create a more open and accessible layout. This level of customization is often hard to find in a new home unless you build from scratch.

4. Financial Considerations: In some cases, building an addition can be more cost-effective than buying a new home, especially when considering the costs associated with moving, real estate fees, and potential renovations needed in a new property. By investing in their current home, we can increase its value while making it more suitable for their needs.

Our Personal Experience

We are currently in the design stages of building a large addition onto my parents' house.
